Week 50


My last 5 cards are based on photos I have of tulips. They are shots that are taken in Holland of the rows and rows of Tulips. Each of the these 5 cards have been made using a different technique and design. This is the third card of the 5 is the rows and rows of tulips. This one is made using raw edged applique and it an ariel view of the fields and houses.

I quilted it with straight lines like the rows of tulips.

Quilting emotion

I've been reading the series once upon a time....the retelling of fairy stories.  They are written by a variety of authors for older children and teens.  They have given me much food for thought.  The authors express emotion very well and view the world in very different ways.  One of the books talks about love

"It's not your love that holds her hostage.  It's your need.  True love wants,  but it doesn't need.  True love thinks of the beloved first"    (The rose bride By Nancy Holder)

This quote describe love in a way that is beautiful and deep.  I have though quite a bit about this quote and what impact it has in my own life. How many times do we ask because of our own needs and not because of the other persons needs?  hmmmmmm.......sometimes I might need some work here.  I would love to translate this quote and others like it into art work.  In this day and age were many people focus on the negative and negative depressing images I want to make a statement with happy uplifting work.  How can I do this. 

1. Choose uplifting topics to photograph or quilt. 
2. Use colour that evokes a nice spirit.  Black is not a colour that works for me on it's own
3. When using sensitive topics use with care
4. Pray throughout the whole quilting process
5. Love what I am working on.  The feeling I have while I am working seems to always come through the finished work.
6. Get others to critique my work
7. Use colour, line,  shape and texture that reflects the mood I want my work to show. 
8. Use expressions on faces to express the emotion.
9. Brainstorm ideas for creating emotion

I wonder what love would look like?

Week 49



My last 5 cards are based on photos I have of tulips. They are shots that are taken in Holland of the rows and rows of Tulips. Each of the next 5 cards have been made using a different technique and design. The second card of the 5 is the rows and rows of tulips.  This one is made using raw edged applique.

This was made with pre-printed cotton fabrics and then machine quilted with poly-cotton thread.

A close up of this card.  I loved the effect of the straight quilting stitches.  Next time I might try wavy lines to see if I can create the effect of the wind moving through the tulips.

Week 48

5 weeks to go!  I have really enjoyed making these cards.  They have been a nice size to work on and quick to finish and a great way of learning new skills.

This card has been made by painting cotton fabric then quilting it. 

I really like this card.  the perspective turned out well and the colours really look like tulips from above.

Skechbook challenge: 7 days of drawing

I am finally up and running again.  I find computers wonderful most the time and highly annoying for the other small part of the time.  If nothing else this glitch in the system has given me time to really get to know how my blog works :-) 

I am really enjoying this sketchbook challenge.  I can see the improvement now from the beginning of the year. It feels so good.  I have kept to my goal of drawing every day and really put a lot of work into my drawing and it is paying off.  Thank you for everyones encouragement and support.  you have helped me stick to my goal.
